What are Mud Terrain Tires?

Mud Terrain tires, also referred to as “M/T tires” or  “mud tires”, are rugged off-road tires that are intended to be used on light trucks, SUVs and other off-road vehicles. Characteristics of a typical Mud Terrain tire are relatively larger spaces between tread blocks compared to Touring, Highway or All-Terrain tires, and an open shoulder design. These large tread spaces help to keep mud or other loose materials from becoming trapped in the grooves, and along with the open shoulders, provide traction in very extreme conditions, such as mud, sand, gravel, rocks, and wet snow. M/T tires are usually constructed with a softer rubber, which gives extra grip on unstable or extreme terrain, which can also be beneficial when driving in wet snow or slush, and rain. In many cases, you can safely drive mud tires in the snow. However, in the case of hard-packed snow, or ice, many mud tires can't provide adequate traction, so make sure to select a mud tire with a 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol rating for severe snow conditions.

Since Mud tires are used on heavier vehicles such as light trucks, large SUVs, Jeeps®, or for towing, most will have reinforced sidewalls to provide a heavier load carrying capacity.

Do Mud Terrain Tires Wear Faster?

In other words, can mud tires be used on-road? Softer treads give drivers an advantage on extreme terrain, but may wear faster on paved roads. Some models can even have reduced stability in rain. However, there are Mud Terrain tire models with tread grooves designed to evacuate water, and if the tire is well-engineered and well-constructed, it will still perform well on-road, in snow, rain and mud.
